TOP 10 MYTHS ABOUT HAIR LOSS

1.  YOU CAN BLAME IT ON YOUR MOTHER!
False – hair loss genes can be inherited from both the mother’s and father’s side of the family.  It is not true that it is determined by your mother’s father alone.

2.  TIGHT FITTING CAPS CAUSE HAIR LOSS
Not true either.  Many people who are balding wear a hat to hide it – but hats, caps, scarves etc. have nothing to do with hair loss.

3.  BRUSHES ARE BETTER THAN COMBS
Neither brushes nor combs cause balding.  However, most hair care experts believe it is better to use a comb because it is less likely to cause splitting.

4.  YOU CAN REVERSE HAIR LOSS BY STANDING ON YOUR HEAD
This is simply not true.  The logic behind this is that standing on your head increases blood flow to that area – which would stimulate hair growth.  We wish it was that easy!

5. CUTTING MY HAIR WILL MAKE IT GROW THICKER
Cutting it shorter my make it appear thicker, as well as remove split ends, but hair cutting has nothing to do with increasing the volume (number of hairs) on your head.

6.  TOO MUCH HAIR WASHING CAUSES HAIR LOSS
It’s wise to be aware of the chemicals hair shampoos contain today and to be cautious about what you use on your hair – but generally the hairs you discover daily in your shower are due to normal shedding or hereditary hair loss.  The act of shampooing itself does not contribute to hair loss.

7.  STRESS CAUSES HAIR LOSS
Rare, extenuating circumstances – involving certain types of stress - may cause sudden hair loss.  This is certainly not the norm.  Everday stress has not been associated with normal hair loss.

8.  BLOW DRYING HAIR CAUSES IT TO FALL OUT
Using your blow dryer as recommended by the manufacturer will not cause hair loss.  It is wise, however, to not expose your hair to extremely high temperatures as this will cause hair damage.

9.  TOWEL DRYING HAIR – VIGOROUSLY- CAN CAUSE HAIR LOSS
While normal hair shedding may occur during towel drying – irreversible hair loss is not caused by towel drying.  Damaged hairs may also shed during vigorous towel drying – but they will grow back.

10.  HAIR LOSS IS NOT REALLY TREATABLE
FALSE!  There is no cure for permanent hair loss at this present time, but there are remedies to restore hair or the appearance of hair – so yes there are ways to safely and effectively treat hair loss.  Certain medications such as finasteride and minoxodil, hair pieces and Dr. Gunnlaugsson’s hair transplantation procedure – can safely restore lost hair.
