A board certified surgeon has more education, training and surgical experience than a physician/surgeon who is not board certified. To be board certified means that the surgeon has several more years of surgical training and experience in meeting the rigorous standards of that board. To be “Fellowship Trained” – means additional years of surgical training and experience over and above that required by the board. Board certification also ensures that the surgeon has specialized in one or more areas – and focused on those in order to become expert in performing surgical and non-surgical procedures in those areas. Investing the extra years of time into specialized surgical training ensures that the surgeon can expect better outcomes with fewer risks than can a general surgeon.
